Age Group and Skills

At swim meets swimmers are divided into age categories based on the swimmers age on May 1st. The categories are 6 and Under; 7-8; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14; and 15-18. At practice swimmers are divided into skill based groups.

Kids new to swim team are encouraged to attend HeadStart (See home page)

  • 6 & Under Swimmers (Duckies) will learn water safety and basic freestyle stroke.
  • 8 and under swimmers will make the team if they are able to swim freestyle (front crawl) across the pool (25 meters). Swimmers may use the assistance of the lane rope (holding and not pulling) to get across the pool.
  • Swimmers 11&up will swim 50 meters (2 length) of freestyle and backstroke.  Swimmers may use the assistance of the lane rope to get across the pool.

Swimmers joining the team will be learning strokes based on their abilities.

Learn To Swim Group

Swimmers in this group have yet to learn the skills needed to swim independently and cross the length of the pool.  These swimmers are working toward learning the skills to swim safely on their own and start competing with the team.

Duckies (ages 4-6)

Swimmers may compete in Freestyle, Backstroke, and Freestyle Relays. Please understand that we are a swim team, not swimming lessons. Swimmers that can cross the length of the pool need to participate in Saturday meets.  If you swimmer is not quite ready to swim across the pool, you are still responsible to come and volunteer.  This is how we keep these fees down.

Swimmers with stronger swim abilities may be eligible to compete in the 8 and Under events. The final decision for which swimmers will swim in these events will be made by the Head Coach.

7-8 and 9-10 Age Groups

Swimmers in this age group will learn and compete in the following strokes: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly.

Each swimmer can compete in 3 individual events and 2 relays. Ribbons will be awarded for the 1st - 6th place finishers in the fasts heat.  If your child is an alternate for one of the relay teams, it is important for your child to stay for the entire meet if assigned as either an active participant or alternate on a relay team.
